हम सब इस बात से परिचित है की पहला पृथ्वी दिवस साल 1970 में मनाया गया था, परंतु इस दिन की शुरुआत किस घटना से हुई यह बात बहुत ही कम लोग जानते है. साल 1969 में केलिफोर्निया में बहुत बड़े पैमाने पर तेल रिसाव हुआ, जिससे आहत होकर नेल्सन मंडेला नामक व्यक्ति राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर एक प्रेरक कार्यक्रम आयोजित करने के लिए प्रेरित हुये. इस कार्यक्रम का मुख्य उद्देश्य राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर लोगों को पर्यावरण संबंधित मुद्दों के लिए जागरूक करना था.
22 अप्रैल 1970 के दिन अमेरिका के कई कॉलेज और स्कूल में पढ़ने वाले विद्यार्थियों के साथ लगभग 20 हजार अमेरिकी लोगों ने एक स्वस्थ पर्यावरण के उद्देश्य से एक राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन में भाग लिया और एक रैली का आयोजन किया. पर्यावरण प्रदूषण के विरूध्द होने वाले इस आंदोलन में अमेरिका के हजारो कॉलेजों और विश्वविद्यालय के युवा शामिल थे. इस समय इन लोगों का प्रदर्शन तेल रिसाव, प्रदूषण फैलाने वाली फ़ैक्ट्रियों, ऊर्जा सायंत्रों से होने वाले प्रदूषण, मलजल प्रदूषण, विषैले कचरे, कीटनाशक, जंगलों का नाश और वन्य जीवों का विलुप्तिकरण आदि मुद्दों पर आधारित था. इसके बाद धीरे-धीरे पर्यावरण संरक्षण का यह मुद्दा अमेरिका से बढ़कर 141 देशों के 200 लोगों मिलियन लोगों तक पहुँच गया. 22 अप्रैल 1990 में आयोजित पृथ्वी दिवस के दिन शामिल सभी देशों में रिसाइकलिंग की प्रोसैस को अपनाने के लिए प्रोत्साहन दिया गया. इसके बाद साल 2000 में हायेज द्वारा विश्व स्तर पर ग्लोबल वार्मिंग के मुद्दे पर ध्यान केंद्रित करवाया गया और इसी समय स्वच्छ ऊर्जा के मुद्दे को भी उठाया गया. और साल 2000 में ही इंटरनेट के जरिये पूरी दुनिया में पृथ्वी दिवस के अंतर्गत कार्य करने वाले कार्यकर्ता जुड़े. इंटरनेट की इस पहल के द्वारा इस वर्ष पूरी दुनिया के लगभग 5000 समूह एक दूसरे से संपर्क में आए और इसमें लगभग 180 देशों के सैकड़ो मिलियन लोगों ने हिस्सा लिया. इस तरह से साल 1970 से लेकर अब तक हर वर्ष पृथ्वी दिवस के कार्यक्रम का स्तर हर वर्ष बढ़ता चला गया और हर वर्ष कई देश और हजारों, लाखों लोग इसमें शामिल होते चले गए.
